I am just curious. How do you feel about young men teaching the lower elementary grade, pre-k--3?
The school I teach at hired a new, very young, I don't think he's 25, male teacher to teach 3rd grade. For about 7 years they had a young man, probably in his twenties, who taught Kindergarten. (He has now left to be a principal at another school.)
Do you think it is appropriate or inappropriate for young men to be teaching the little ones? Do you think it is wrong? If so why? If not, why not.
I am just curious.

Don't teachers have to have a criminal background check?
If the teacher, male or female, can teach my child and not deter them from going to school, they can teach whatever grade they want to!

My cousin's daughter had this teacher at OLMC, .and they seemed to like him. Personally, I think it's a little wierd. I think I'm stereo-typing. I'm guessing he took that job because it was the only one out there at the time, and it paid the bills until he came across a bigger and better job. Can you tell us at which school he will be principal? I'm curious because he's engaged to our Gym teacher at SACS. Thanks!

I think male teachers are awesome! My boys didn't have any until 4th grade, but I would have welcomed them earlier. I read an interesting story about how we are teaching our children to be afraid of men and how that may harm them later (both boys and girls). It concerns me a lot.

Good point MonkeyMom . . . but I have to admit that I'd react a little at first. I'd hope that I would make a quick enough recovery that no one would know. But you are right we are becoming very suspicious of men interacting with our children. And I think a male Kindergarten teacher would probably be fantastic!

If the young man was just a gym teacher for the younger grades no one would question it at all. Some men are just as gifted with kids as women are. I think it would have been great for dd #1 to have a male teacher in K.

Thank you for your responses.
When I was a child, male teachers were virtually unheard of, except at the Jr. or Sr. high level. I do not recall my children having male teachers until they were in high school. But now I see more and more young men becoming elementary school teachers and some of them seek the "baby grades." I was just curious as to how modern moms felt about it.
I think it is great to have the male image at such a young age. Many children today do not have father-figures at home nor male role models. I think that a good, compassionate, caring man in their lives is necessary. Why not in the classrooom!

Okay Mom - yes we did. There was male teacher that tought 4/5/6 when we were in those grades. Although as a teacher I'm sure he was fairly forgetable!

I agree with Pat......
I think it is great that more men are becoming teachers for the younger grades. In my opinion a child can never have too many positive role models in their lives. Too many children grow up without a positive male role model these days ( I am not counting children who have the benefit of an involved granddad, uncle, step dad..etc). I did kind of feel sorry for some of the men teachers in the district where my kids went...year after year they were given the most difficult children to teach, the majority of whom had no father figure in their life. It was then that we could say “thank God for Mr. Young Man teacher, he probably saved that kid” You know so many are worried about young male teachers being perverts....read/watch the news and all you hear about are the women teachers after all the young boys...

Great point about being a male role model for those kids that don't have one, Pat! I had a couple of male teachers in grades 4 & 5 & they were among my favorites. I also think that boys tend to learn differently than girls (& the way schools are set up to teach) & male teachers can relate to that better & may have an easier time tweaking their teaching methods to account for that.
